Your turn again

While Mike & I travel, we have constant conversations about this house and some questions have come up on which we need your input. We're trying to decide which things might be worth the investment.

Given that we are renting out half of this house, and that it will be in a rather upscale rental district (yes, some people really do want to live in or near the French Quarter!) please weigh in on these choices:

1. a) Regular tub and shower.
b) Jacuzzi type tub - and shower, of course.

2. a) Granite countertops (probably granite tiles)
b) Fake stone (like Corian or Silestone)
c) Tile
d) Good formica

3. a) Off-white paint throughout
b) Light mocha or beige with white trim

4. a) Gas stove
b) Electric stove

5. a) Side-by-side fridge-freezer
b) Fridge with top freezer (cheapest alternative)
c) Fridge with bottom freezer

6. a) Stainless appliances
b) Black appliances
c) White appliances

7. a) Blue and gray stone-look tiles (bath and kitchen)
b) Beige "travertine" tiles

8. a) Gas fire in the old un-used fireplace
b) None

1.Compromise w/ a garden tub and shower. Jacuzzi jets can be a maintenance nightmare, especially for a landlord.
2. Upscale neighborhood needs something a little more than c) or d). Again, I would think about maintenance as a landlord. Will a renter take care of granite or would fake stone be more durable.
3. Definitely light mocha or beige w/ white trim.
4. Purely preference. I prefer a gas stove, but most of the apts I've seen have total electric.
5. side-by-sides that I have seen don't always have as much room as you think they will have and bottom freezers are sometime hard to find things.
6. Depends on your decorating style. stainless for more modern, black for more drama, white for clean, open and airy. Stainless and black are more updated too.
7. Beige would give more decorating options.
8. You can't go wrong with a fireplace, but if it hasn't been used in a long time, make sure it's safe! To get it up to snuff might be expensive.

For all choices in all rooms, try to have a flow from one room to another between colors and textures.

And that's my thought for the day.

I'm with Fran on almost eveything!

I am having a hard time on the tiles. I can't disagree, really. Beige is more neutral and probabaly would even look more appropriate - especially with the paint color. I just like the blue/grey more. (*sigh*) Of course, personal preferences are not the key here. Functionality and flexibility are much more important!
